Cow Urine Mandatory in Temples | गौमुत्र का सच

Those Hindus who do not drink cow urine will not be given entry inside the temple—when such an appeal was made from Gangotri Dham in Uttarakhand, I was shocked. Well, earlier I used to see on mobile that the social media Sanatanis or Hindu religion defenders make content while drinking cow urine or bathing in cow urine, but I did not take them so seriously.

But when I saw that highly qualified people like the Director of IIT Madras talk about the medicinal benefits of cow urine—anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, stomach irritable syndromari namak goyam namak medicine, medicinal value—and then right there, celebrities like Akshay Kumar tell that they drink cow urine every day for Ayurvedic benefits, "for because of Ayurvedic reasons they have had thousand you everyday", then I became serious regarding the subject of cow urine.

And then one day, I received a message from a friend of mine which had a photo, and on it was written that "faith makes one drink even urine, but caste does not let one drink water", and I was shaken from inside. Now I wanted to know the truth, and therefore I started studying ancient Ayurvedic texts and modern scientific papers, and the truth that I found out on the subject of cow urine is very shocking.

Ancient History and the Perspective of Our Ancestors

So companions, to know the truth of cow urine, we will have to go back at least two and a half to three thousand years ago because then we will understand what our ancestors thought regarding the subject of cow urine. But before that, you have to understand that the cow that exists, its stomach is divided into four chambers, and our Ayurvedacharyas used to look at it like a biological distillation plant.

Now why am I calling it a biological distillation plant? Because the research that our ancestors did, in that they saw that if a cow eats grass and straw, eats herbs, then after that, its digestive system which is divided into four chambers processes those consumed substances, and then the best, most excellent bio-active extract of those substances comes out through the path of their urine.

Now here, whether that urine should be drunk or should not be drunk, let us keep it a little to the side, we will discuss that just now. But why am I calling it scientific? Because if you go into our texts, it is not that research happened on the cow or only the urine of the cow was consumed solely due to religious faith. In our ancient Ayurvedic texts, research has happened on the urine of different kinds of animals. We find at least 8 to 12 such animals on whose urine experiments are seen. That means our sages and saints, instead of just falling into faith or superstition, were not researching only the cow, but were researching the urine of different animals and different living creatures so that if it has some benefit, medicinal property, it can be received by human beings.

Evidences from Ayurvedic Texts

If you look at Sushrut Samhita of Maharishi Sushrut, then in verse 220 of chapter 45, it has been said that cow urine is pungent, sharp, hot, and alkaline, meaning containing alkali. It is the destroyer of Kapha and Vata doshas. Apart from this, it is helpful in curing leprosy meaning skin disease, abdominal disease, epilepsy meaning fits, asthma, cough, and worm diseases. So according to Sushrut Samhita, the cow urine that exists is used in the form of medicine, and in which specific diseases it is used is given in this verse, in this line.

Then after that comes Maharishi Charak, and if we look in his Charak Samhita as well, then in the very first chapter he has confirmed, and as I had told that after researching the urines of many animals, he further confirms as well that cow urine is the best among the urines of all those animals. After that, Maharishi Vagbhata also validated in his Ashtanga Hridayam that yes, cow urine is more beneficial compared to the urines of other living creatures.

So if you keep a scientific viewpoint as well, then you can see that in different time periods, after repeated research, after doing experiments many times, this fact is found in our Ayurvedic texts that cow urine has been found superior to the urine of other living creatures. So this is not any superstition, research has happened on this. Yes, research happened according to its capacity, the way research could happen in that time period. So we cannot say that this is based on superstition, that because we call the cow holy, no research has happened, we are just consuming its urine due to considering it holy.

The Correct Method of Consumption: Not Diet, Only Medicine

Now here, the important thing that exists is to understand that in any of these texts, cow urine has not been told as a healthy diet or like food that you are consuming daily and drinking a glass of cow urine, this kind of description is not found. The descriptions that are found are only medicinal, they are found in the form of medicine.

And Maharishi Charak Ji has also clarified in his Charak Samhita that no matter how virtuous any medicine is, if it is taken more than its quantity, taken in excess quantity, it will definitely spoil your Vata, Pitta, Kapha and will give you disease only. And companions, we saw that in our Ayurvedic texts, cow urine has been told to be very sharp and hot, meaning if we consume it raw without taking the advice of a physician, then our Pitta can become imbalanced.

That is why in the tradition of Ayurveda, with time, when gradually research moved further forward, more emphasis started being given to cow urine extract rather than cow urine. Now what is this cow urine extract? You can understand it in English—cow urine distillate. What is an extract? If you go into Arka Prakash text as well, then there it has been told about the extract. So the distillation process of today is itself called Arka. Meaning whatever fluid you have, you heat it, let vapor come from it, you cool that vapor and collect it somewhere, that is Arka.

So when you make the extract of cow urine, you are ensuring that if there is any such bacteria or microorganism in it which can infect you, then we terminate it in this process, in this process of distillation. Meaning in our tradition of Ayurveda, cow urine comes into use as a medicine in the form of its extract. No such evidence is found that we take it directly in a glass and drink it, or that we sit directly beneath the mother cow and consume her cow urine. So companions, we saw that in our texts, in the texts of Ayurveda, medicinal properties of cow urine are found. But now the question arises that if they are found, then why is its validation not happening today, and today when there are modern medicines, advanced medicines, is cow urine or extract relevant in today's time or not?

Modern Science and CSIR's Research

Now companions, we come to modern science. We have to verify whether the medicinal benefit of the extract of cow urine given in our ancient texts, ancient Ayurvedic texts, is correct or not. Therefore, there is a corporate body of India, CSIR—Council of Scientific and Industrial Research—and when top scientists from there made a resolution to test this, they also took the extract of cow urine of only those cows which were reared in a good natural environment.

And after that, the results that came out were shocking to everyone because just as it is found in the texts of Ayurveda, according to that, it was seen in the extract of cow urine that when given along with anti-cancer medicines, it is very effective in the form of a bio-enhancer. Now what is this bio-enhancer? So it can be understood in very simple language that whenever we take any medicine, like took some anti-cancer drug or took an antibiotic, then that entire medicine is not absorbed in our body 100%, some part of it gets wasted by mixing with our stomach's acids. So we can put some enhancer in it, can put a bio-enhancer, so that absorption increases.

So in the research of CSIR, it was found that there is a medicine Rifampicin, it is a medicine for TB, if drops of cow urine extract are mixed in it, then that medicine gets absorbed in a better way. Meaning cow urine extract is a very good natural bio-enhancer. Now companions, this bio-enhancing property in the extract of cow urine is not any pseudo-scientific claim, rather for this research, CSIR has received two patents from America. So if someone makes fun of the medicinal properties that exist in cow urine, then he is insulting science. In fact, in many in-vitro studies, meaning inside the lab, it has also been seen that there are very good anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties in the extract of cow urine.

Why Don't Modern Doctors Prescribe It? (Pharma Economics)

But here the biggest question arises that when it has been proved that the extract of cow urine is a very good bio-enhancer, is anti-bacterial, is anti-fungal, and patent has also been received on it, then why don't today's allopathy doctors prescribe it? Let us know this.

Now companions, if you understand medical science, then in that, there are very many phases of testing on any medicine. Like whenever a claim is made on any medicine, first its testing happens in the lab, suppose you did testing on bacteria on some petri dish in the lab or you did it on a mouse, on a rat. But for any medicine to be prescribed for humans, it will have to pass human clinical trials as well, in which double-blind placebo-controlled testing has to be done on thousands of humans for many years.

Now here you will say, so brother do the testing, what is the problem in doing testing? So companions, here I tell you a term—pharma economics. Here when we do testing, especially when we do Human Clinical Trials, then our very huge amount of money and very huge amount of time is spent. In the pharma industry, money and time are spent only on those medicines whose testing, after becoming successful, can be sold in the market at good prices so that return on investment can be received. This is a simple business, whatever input cost went in investment, in its testing, if we did not make money from it, then there is no benefit in bringing that medicine into the market.

If the extract of cow urine passes human clinical trials as well, then after that there is no incentive with the pharma industry that a lot of money will be able to be made from it because the methods of making cow urine extract are already given in our texts. So this is not any such chemical combination which you can keep private and make a very huge amount of money from it. This cow urine extract that exists can be made at home as well. And since human clinical trials have not happened, data is not available on very many humans, therefore today's doctors do not prescribe cow urine extract or distillate or medicines made from it. Today's modern doctors prescribe evidence-based medicine only, on which a very huge entire trial has happened, we have data, only then it goes into prescription.

The Balance of Faith, Superstition, and Science

But this does not mean that the extract of cow urine that exists, the medicinal properties it has, the medicinal use it has, is superstition. This is a tradition of ours of thousands of years. If you look at the latest research along with Ayurvedic texts, then it is scientifically proven that there are medicinal benefits in the extract of cow urine.

But even after saying this much, I will say this that cow urine becomes superstition when today's cows which eat plastic, eat garbage, live in filth, and after that, you take the cow urine of those very cows in a glass, take it in a cup and drink it, or else take a bath under it, and then you show that we keep religion very high; so this is blind faith, this is superstition, and we should avoid this.

There are very many things in Sanatan Dharma on which we can be proud, and science is not needed for everything either. If we consider the cow as mother, consider her holy, then for that love you do not need science. But yes, science is needed there where you make any scientific claim. I would rather want that the Government of India conducts human clinical trials on the extract of cow urine as well, and what is the need to fear in this? If it passes, then that thing will come into our research, the general public will be able to utilize it, and even if it does not pass, then also very many people who use cow urine in this manner will at least get a scientific proof that there is no benefit of the extract of cow urine.

Conclusion

So we should be proud of Sanatan Dharma but that should not be mere demonstration. Behind it you must have logic, science, and a deep understanding of religion. And if you want to know, read, understand about Sanatan Dharma but you are not able to decide from where to start, which text to pick up first, then I am teaching, explaining Sanatan Dharma step by step from zero in a very beautiful way, in a very fun way, taking the evidences of the scriptures on my Shikshanam platform.
